The recycling company Envir aims to create even better and more accurate CO2 accounting. Digitread Connect has contributed to the development of a well-functioning solution, but the ambitions going forward are even higher.
Envir recycles soil and lightly contaminated masses. The materials, often sourced from contractors, construction sites, road projects, and similar, are treated at the high-tech processing plant the company operates outside of Bergen city center. Here, the materials are washed and sorted into various fractions such as sand, gravel, crushed stone, and topsoil, which is steamed to remove weeds and unwanted species.
“We then sell the recycled products back to contractors who need them. This is much more climate-friendly than, for example, buying new crushed stone or gravel that has to be produced at a quarry,” explains Henry Karlsen at Envir.
Accurate Reporting
In Norway, there is a goal for the construction industry to achieve a recycling rate of 70 percent, but the industry is far from reaching this target. Proper climate accounting is also needed on the way to achieving this goal.
Envir's ambitions are precisely to create an accurate climate account to contribute positively to the development. The common method today is to rely on models to calculate CO2 consumption, but this is not particularly accurate.
"We wanted to report actual values, and that was the beginning of the collaboration with Digitread Connect. Through the collaboration, we are now able to collect data from all machines in our entire fleet. This allows us to report actual energy use from both our electric and diesel-powered machines," explains Karlsen.
Simply put, Digitread Connect’s IoT platform, KYB, captures all this data and refines it in such a way that Envir can use real data instead of calculated values based on models with many potential sources of error.
"The goal is to report the data back to our customers so they can calculate their own emissions more accurately, both in terms of what they can save by having materials recycled and how much CO2 they can reduce their emissions by using recycled materials," he continues.
High Level of Ambition
The collaboration with Digitread Connect started last year, and Karlsen says it was quick to establish a well-functioning solution.
"So far, data is only collected from existing equipment and sensors, but if we need to gather data from other sources, Digitread Connect can help us put such solutions in place. This is important since we foresee that in the future, we will encounter things not covered by the machine suppliers, and then we must be able to obtain the desired data in other ways."
Envir also envisions creating an end-user service that their customers will have access to. The platform will allow customers to calculate both CO2 emissions and costs associated with delivering materials to Envir, and Digitread Connect will deliver the solution that customers will have access to.
"Additionally, we envision that drivers who bring the materials will eventually receive updated information from Envir on the same platform. Looking even further ahead, we want to obtain data from the trucks that deliver to us to collect real data from them. Today, the data we receive regarding the actual transport is based only on theoretical models, and that is not accurate enough."
Giving Customers a Competitive Edge
At Envir, they are confident that they are giving their customers a significant competitive advantage with the solutions they have and are in the process of further developing. They are also aware that many new requirements will emerge in this field and want to be at the forefront with solutions that can meet these requirements smoothly and robustly for the benefit of their customers.
"Digitread Connect takes responsibility for collecting the data in the KYB platform, refining it, and presenting it in sensible formats, in the way Envir desires, whether it's in customer data platforms or for internal reporting. They are a good partner for us as they both own the platform and understand how this can be practically solved to the benefit of all parties," concludes Henry Karlsen.
