From Data to Valuable Insights

26. november 2024

It is often said that you cannot improve what you cannot measure, and in Industry 4.0, everything is measured. Across various industrial sectors, machines and equipment are increasingly equipped with sensors that continuously monitor performance. However, despite the immense value of this data, it is often underutilized. For many companies, processing this data simply becomes too challenging or costly.

Digitread Connect has a clear mission: to turn equipment data into valuable insights for its customers—whether in maritime maintenance or aquaculture. As a provider of industrial IoT-as-a-service, Digitread Connect manages the entire data journey, from equipment sensors through analysis to end users, who can be anyone from engineers and technicians to inspectors and farmers. This information is then used to make businesses greener, safer, and more efficient.

Tailor-Made Solutions Based on Needs

From day one, Digitread Connect has understood that collecting and making data useful requires a combination of platforms. Although IoT relies on the internet, data often needs to be processed closer to the equipment itself before being sent onward. For this purpose, Digitread Connect has developed a solution to retrieve data from sensors and control units, analyze it locally, and then upload the most important elements to the cloud.

To provide customers with a seamless experience, Digitread Connect developed its own IoT platform that can operate both at the edge (edge computing) and in the application layer. This allows equipment performance to be optimized according to specific customer needs.

At the same time, it has been crucial to make the process as user-friendly as possible:

– "We’ve noticed that many existing IoT platforms make it more challenging than necessary to utilize data effectively. In this day and age, we need to strive to develop enterprise solutions that are as easy to use as the apps we use in our personal lives. That’s how we think," says Helge Kjeilen, Chairman of Digitread Connect.

Focus on Simplicity and Performance

Digitread Connect built its solution around time series data collected through a series of recurring measurements. In industrial environments, this is used to monitor the activity and performance of equipment. The amount of data generated can be enormous, and Digitread Connect therefore needed a highly scalable database. After evaluating several options, they chose MongoDB.

– "With MongoDB Atlas, we don’t have to worry about the details of database management. The engineers at MongoDB have already done the work, making it very easy for us to leverage the solution optimally," explains Kjeilen.

Using Time Series Collections in MongoDB Atlas, running on AWS (Amazon Web Services), time series data is captured at the edge, analyzed, and filtered. Only the most relevant data is uploaded to applications, where Digitread Connect also uses a no-code platform from Appfarm, also built on MongoDB, to create and manage end-user solutions.

– "We were truly impressed by the simplicity and performance. Time series data is at the core of our business, and MongoDB made it easy for us to handle this. The solution was quickly available to our customers," says Kjeilen.

The Results

With MongoDB Atlas at its core, Digitread Connect has developed software that captures and analyzes data locally before sending it on to the IoT platform KYB. The customer only needs to connect their equipment and sensors—the rest is automated. And at the heart of the entire solution, where the data is stored, is MongoDB Atlas.

Customers can choose the standard KYB platform interface or opt for customization. Thanks to the collaboration with the no-code platform Appfarm, we can now deliver tailored applications in record time.

If customized solutions are desired, Digitread Connect has partners who use KYB as a foundation and develop user-friendly solutions in alignment with the company’s business operations. What previously took months can now be completed in less than one day. The result is optimal resource utilization, with financial, operational, and environmental benefits.

Digitread Connect is looking ahead to new applications:
– "The insights we enable can be used for machine learning for predictive maintenance and to prevent equipment failures. We see enormous potential in collecting data from all types of components and machinery worldwide and making it accessible so that the data can be used to create added value," concludes Helge Kjeilen.
